NATALIA DURAN ON THE ANTI-BULLYING CAMPAIGN
Working with the immigrant community, I have the privilege to hear and be part of the mothers’ stories. The Women’s Justice Circle and JCIRA have created an anti-bullying campaign named Sabias Que? (Did You Know?). Together we found that bullying is one of the situations that affects our community in a significant way.
In collaboration with Port Townsend School District, we will be sharing through social media, in Spanish and English, the District Code of Conduct. Our goal is to educate the community on how important it is to report any discriminatory behavior. Schools are like a second home for our children. No one should be calling children “border jumper” just because their family migrated from México.
We must initiate the conversations at home. The false rhetoric about the immigrant community on TV and social media are hurting all of us; however, this is very detrimental to our children. The rhetoric is hurting the children’s capacity to see and embrace diversity as a way to enlarge our possibilities as human beings. Who is the immigrant community? Why do these people migrate and what is the history of the people in movement? These are the conversations we should be having right now.
As Brian Ledford said, “Immigration issues are controversial, but it should not be controversial to treat someone with respect and dignity.”
